College Student Health Insurance

Good health insurance is essential with today’s sky high medical costs. Discover how to get the best individual health insurance for your particular needs.

Starting college is an exciting and life changing event. It is usually the first major, independent move a young person makes. Having adequate health insurance is a priority that needs to be addressed from the outset.

Most people looking for college student health insurance are usually those who are no longer covered under their parent’s insurance plans, or their college resides outside the HMO or PPO region of their current insurance.

Around two thirds of students will be covered under their parent’s policies until they reach 25 years of age.
For those over 25 or are not covered by a parents insurance plan, more than half of all colleges offer their own student health insurance. However, the quality and level of coverage varies considerably between colleges.

Some students may qualify for Medicaid, such as low income students younger than 19 or who were previously in foster care. For the remaining students who find themselves without an insurance umbrella of some sort, it is imperative they find the best policy at the most cost effective price.

Fortunately most students are young and healthy and so insurance plans will usually be cheaper and easier to come by than the average. It is important to research the numerous insurance companies that offer college student health insurance and compare their levels of cover as well as the monthly costs.

Don’t be tempted to go for a ‘bare bones’ policy just because you’re young and healthy. Accidents happen all the time and illness can strike at any age, including certain types of cancers.

You will also need to take into account any pre-existing medical conditions. Expect to pay a higher premium or even have the condition excluded from the policy.

In today’s economic climate there are lots of companies offering competitive plans for college students. As with buying individual health insurance,do your research and you should be able to find a good deal.

Parents, make sure your college student is covered! 9 times out of 10, when they move out and into their dorm or own apartment, your plan will no longer cover them. Being exposed to all those party animals in the college atmosphere, they need the coverage now more than ever! Speak to a health insurance professional to discuss your needs regarding your beloved college student.

It is great to finally get useful information rather than the normal garbage. You are using a profitable tool: Help others fulfill THEIR needs & you can fulfill your own needs at the same time. That is all we apply at our office: Assist others & we can be generously compensated for doing so. Thanks!
