Temporary Medical Insurance
Good health insurance is essential with today’s sky high medical costs. Discover how to get the best individual health insurance for your particular needs.
Temporary Medical Insurance is just that, a temporary policy that covers any medical expenses while you arrange some type of permanent cover. The period of cover usually extends from 1 to 6 months although some companies will insure you up to 12 months.
There can be several reasons for needing temporary medical insurance. For example; you may have just graduated from college and are no longer covered under your student health insurance or you moved out on your own, and you’re no longer covered under your parents’ medical insurance policy. Or perhaps you’re employed part-time, going to school, leaving home for the first time, or even retiring early. Maybe you’ve found a new job and you have to wait a few months before you qualify for your new employer’s group health insurance plan. An affordable, temporary health insurance plan just might be the ideal solution for you.
Just as with buying individual health insurance, temporary health insurance policies should offer a comprehensive range of cover, including physician services, prescriptions, X-ray, laboratory services, inpatient hospital stays, inpatient and outpatient hospital surgeries, skilled nursing facility care and rehabilitation. You also get to use your own doctor and local hospitals.
Over 16 million people in the US alone will purchase temporary medical insurance this year and companies are falling over themselves to offer you their cover. Due to the high competition among insurers, costs have been considerably driven down. Short term cover can be very affordable if you shop around for the best deals.
In order to qualify for most short-term health insurance policies, you need to be in fairly good health and be under 65 years of age. For some plans, coverage can be extended to dependents under the age of 19, or under 25 for dependents who are full-time students. Anyone over the age of 65 is covered by Medicare. After answering a few medical questions, coverage can be available as early as the next day.
Pre-existing conditions
‘Pre-existing condition’ refers to a medical issue which was present prior to one obtaining their health insurance policy. Having pre-existing conditions can lead to a lot of frustration when trying to obtain temporary cover. Depending on what the pre-condition is, the majority of insurers will still cover you although the policy might be slightly different and the cost may be higher. If this applies to you, make sure you are 100% clear that your temporary policy covers your medical needs.
Lots of people have pre-existing conditions when applying for temp health cover. Some of the more common ones include pregnancy, obesity, arthritis, diabetes, depression and fibromyalgia. Each individual insurance company will have their own list of pre-existing conditions and have their own standards when it comes to providing insurance coverage for those who have a condition.
When searching for health cover online, you might want to consider using the various terms it is known as in order to find the best plan. Such as: temporary medical/health insurance, short term medical/health insurance and temporary/short-term health cover. This is a very competitive industry and there are good deals to be had if you do your homework and a little research.

Temporary medical insurance can be very beneficial, as long as the buyer is aware of its provisions and limitations. First, it is usually much cheaper than a permanent plan, in some cases even half the price. This can be a lifesaver for those who are in between jobs, and is in general a cheaper choice than COBRA. Another pro of temporary insurance is it’s promptness, in fact, most plans begin coverage the day after you complete the application
A temporary health insurance plan will not cover any pre-existing conditions. If they did, nobody would buy health insurance and wait until they were sick, and simply buy temporary health insurance. That is not the way it works folks. Temporary health insurance is good for coverage between jobs, or while you’re waiting for your benefits to begin at a new place of employment. That’s why you use a Licensed Health Insurance Agent, when you but these products.
I must agree on Tammy on this one. I don’t think temporary insurance plan covers pre-existing conditions as Tammy mentioned nobody would care to get a full time health insurance plans, may these temporary health insurance plans doesn’t cover financial support for many treatments perhaps?
I suffer from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I guess that won’t be covered as you describe it as pre-existing conditions?
Temporary medical insurance shouldn’t be relied upon for serious illnesses which you may be suffering already from. Make sure that y ou utilise this time effectively whilst you pursue other avenues for health insurance cover. You will find that once the temporary health insurance coverage period is over, you will run into high premiums and other pitfalls.
Health insurance is a must have at all time. We are glad that we are healthy and active but the truth is that we can never know when illness or a freak accident can strike us down. This is why it’s part of a preventive thinking to be ensured at all times. For example, I left the country for a two weeks vacation and needed medical care in Europe. Although I was covered by health insurance back home, it did not extend overseas. Now, the first thing I do when I travel, I get health insurance.
